Or you sit down to study still thinking about the last drill. Either way, your focus doesn’t reset, and neither one gets your full attention.

Your body can be at training while your mind is still at school. I wrote about spending the first fifteen minutes of a session trying to get my head into training, and how a short “Gear Shift” helped: shut down the school day, reset your body, and prime for the session. This issue is about the switch the other way, from practice to study.

A focus that doesn’t reset is often not a discipline problem. It can be a missing transition, and it can be practised.

A 2024 study of 360 college athletes gave this skill a name: flexible focus, the ability to switch cleanly between training and study contexts. The authors associate it with better academic and athletic outcomes, and recommend building it with detailed daily plans. It’s one study, correlational, self-reported, and specific to that sample, so take it as real evidence, not a guarantee.

This week’s system to test: build one small transition ritual between practice and study. Change out of training clothes. Get water. Name the one task you’re starting. A few minutes, nothing elaborate. No study has tested that exact ritual, so treat it as a practical suggestion.

Take the free Student-Athlete Performance Score (5 minutes, 18 questions) to see which of the six areas is costing you the most right now.

Take the free Performance Score

If you’re a parent, the free Parent Support Score is a 5-minute look at how well home supports your child’s recovery, structure, and confidence. If you’re a coach, the free Coach Impact Score is a 5-minute look at how you manage workload, communicate, develop athletes, and coach the individual in front of you.

Get Your Parent Support Score

Get Your Coach Impact Score

Source: Liu and Taresh (2024), Journal of Ecohumanism, https://doi.org/10.62754/joe.v3i7.4520
